How Long To Wait To Plug In A Refrigerator?

It is always an event of excitement whenever you bring home some new item, may it be clothing, bedding, new furniture, new bike, new car, new TV or any other electrical appliances such as a new fridge, freezer of an Air-conditioner. While it is very easy to get started with your newly purchased items, it is somewhat a tricky affair when it comes to the electrical appliances, like an Air-conditioner, a Refrigerator or a Freezer.

Plug in a Refrigerator

These items contain a sensitive part, known as compressor, which works with delicate fluids and gases. So, it is very important to install these items carefully before starting or using. You must have heard or read on the instructions manual of such items that after placing the appliances in its required area, don’t immediately plug in; rather wait for a certain period before plugging in the appliances.

But why? Why and how long should we wait to plug in such appliances? Here we are giving you the answer. We, in this article, will restrict to your newly purchased refrigerator and will guide you how long should you wait to plug in a refrigerator.

Transportation And Placement In Your Kitchen

The gases and fluids that are responsible for providing cooling in your refrigerator, run through the entire back panel of the fridge which is compressor. During transportation from the factory to the retailer’s outlet and on wards to your home, there is every likelihood, that the refrigerator may not always remain upright; it may be laid sideways or on its back during transportation.

Transportation And Placement In Your Kitchen

Doing so, the gases and fluids get disturbed, especially the fluids in the compressor. If we start the fridge instantly, the compressor will not work properly, or even it may stop working at all. Hence, it is very important and always advised by the manufacturers to follow the pattern as described under:

  • Carefully load the refrigerator on the vehicle, preferably in an upright position. This position is always suggested through a diagram on the packing.
  • Ensure minimum possible jerks to the appliance.
  • Unload and unpack the refrigerator carefully and place it in the pre-defined area in your kitchen, which should be away from direct sunlight, direct heat and away from the water taps.
  • The floor where you place the fridge should be flat. If at all, you have to place it on an uneven surface, use padding or packing on the floor to make it flat. Since it works with the gases and the fluids, it is highly important to place it on an even surface so that the flow of gases should remain normal.
  • To check whether the fridge is balanced or not, open the door and leave it free. If it automatically moves on either of the directions, the fridge is not properly placed. The door should not move automatically if the fridge is placed on an even surface in a balanced position.
  • Ample space on all sides of the fridge should be available; minimum 3-5 centimeters on each side and on the back, more than two inches away from the wall.
Installation of Refrigerator
  • Make sure that the voltage of electric supply in your home (in most parts of the world, 220 Volts, whereas in some countries like Japan, 110 Volts), must match with the power supply requirement of your refrigerator. It is more important if you have an imported refrigerator.
  • The power socket should be close to the refrigerator, as much as possible.
  • Make sure that the power socket must match with the type of plug, supplied with the refrigerator.
  • Clean the inside surfaces of the refrigerator with soft cloth and water with some soft detergent.
  • Once placed your refrigerator properly, don’t immediately plug in the power supply; wait for at least 2-3 hours (depending on the instructions given in the manual) before you switch on the power supply so that the fluid and gases settle down to normal status in the compressor.

Now that you have installed your refrigerator properly, you must be excited to switch it on. But be patient; give a proper rest to the refrigerator before you start using it. Why is it so important to give it a rest for some time? Because the gases and fluids have been moved out of place during the transportation and these need a little more time to get settled.

As said earlier, if these do not get ample time to settle down, your refrigerator may not work properly or even the compressor may go faulty. So, make sure to give rest to your refrigerator.

How Long Refrigerator Needs A Delay Before Switching On?

Although every manufacturer of the refrigerators, provide the time for which you need to delay switching it on, yet as a thumb rule, you may safely start your refrigerator after waiting for some 5-6 hours. But if you are sure that the refrigerator has been transported to your home, while placed in an upright position, you may reduce the time to 2-3 hours.

Installation Delay

However, it is always important to consult the operation manual supplied by the manufacturers, before you start your refrigerator. For your convenience, we provide the time recommended by some renowned brands for which you have to wait before plugging in.

  • Indesit – minimum of three hours.
  • LG – for about one hour.
  • Bosch – minimum of two hours.
  • Samsung – minimum of two hours.

Important: The refrigerator doesn’t instantly get enough cooling; it may take some 3-5 hours before the inside temperature is conducive to the food items to remain fresh. So, after switching on the refrigerator, you may have to wait for another 3-5 hours before you place the food items in it.

If due to any reasons, there is a breakdown of the power supply, make sure that the refrigerator should not be restarted instantly; you must wait for at least 3-5 minutes to restart it.
